Dean Calarco Retires

After more than 40 years at UCSF, Dean Patricia Calarco, PhD, retired on October 1. Dean Calarco began her tenure at UCSF in 1971 as a professor in the Department of Anatomy and has led the Graduate Division as dean since 2005. Read more about Dean Calarco’s many UCSF accomplishments online here.

New MS and PhD Programs

The Graduate Division is pleased to announce new Master’s Degree programs in Biomedical Imaging and Dental Hygiene, and the Developmental and Stem Cell Biology PhD Program, beginning this fall. In 2010 we also launched a PhD program in Epidemiology and Translational Science

UCSF Tops National Research Council 2010 Rankings

UCSF research-doctorate programs have ranked among the nation’s best in a survey released in September by the National Research Council. Twelve of UCSF’s PhD programs were ranked in this study, and 10 placed in the top six programs in their fields, with three of those including the No. 1 rank. Read more.

During her State of the University address on October 4, Chancellor Susan Desmond-Hellmann, MD, MPH, unveiled a new vision for UCSF – to be the world's preeminent health sciences innovator – as part of a three-year plan for the University. Read more.

The Western Association of Schools and Colleges has reaffirmed UCSF’s accreditation across all four schools and the Graduate Division, citing the commission’s confidence in UCSF’s capacity to continue achieving its goals for student success into the future. Read more.

School of Nursing Welcomes New Dean

David Vlahov, PhD, RN, a pioneer in urban health research, expert in global health epidemiology and highly prolific author, has joined the UCSF leadership team as dean of the School of Nursing. Read Dean Vlahov’s recent interview about his research on the after effects of the 9/11 attacks here.

UCSF Graduate Students Earn Prestigious Fellowships

UCSF Graduate Division Fellowships were awarded to 46 recipients this academic year, and another 25 students received Graduate Student Research Fellowship awards from the National Science Foundation. "The quality of applicants and the resultant student body has increased phenomenally," said Dean Calarco. Read more.

UCSF Student Wins UC President's Award for Leadership

UCSF Neuroscience doctoral candidate Jason Tien was honored at a UC Regents meeting earlier this year with the prestigious UC President’s Award in Outstanding Student Leadership. Read more.

scientist recognized for pioneering stem cell research

Neural stem cell scientist Arturo Alvarez-Buylla, PhD, has been named one of three scientists to receive the 2011 Prince of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research. Read more.

Maurice Cohen, PhD, faculty member in the UCSF-UCB Bioengineering Graduate Group, has been honored for his achievements in the areas of science and art with the Grande Medaille d’Or presented by the French academy Arts, Sciences, et Lettres. See photos here.

Kathy Giacomini, PhD, co-chair, UCSF Department of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences, has been named the recipient of the 2011 Scheele Award by the Swedish Academy of Pharmaceutical Scientists. Read more.

Lily Jan, PhD, and Yuh Nung Jan, PhD, have been awarded the Tenth Annual Wiley Prize in Biomedical Sciences. Read more.

Vikaas Sohal, MD, PhD, a neuroscience faculty member, was named a 2011 Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow. Read more.

Linda Wilbrecht, PhD, a neuroscientist at the Ernest Gallo Clinic and Research Center at UCSF, was one of 94 researchers named in September by President Obama as a recipient of the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers. Read more.
